Local Update: Feb. 7/10 February 7, 2010

Things I came across that are worth checking out, this week with a particular focus on local initiatives/issues in BC.

  • With all eyes on Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics, the awesome folks at Antigone Magazine have put together a really cool Dreams For Women 2010 calendar, featuring art created by women athletes and interesting women’s history factoids. You can order calendars online or get one at one of several local stores (I noticed them at the VPL Bookmark store at the downtown library).
  • The Vancouver Observer has a neat profile of Janice Abbott, Executive Director of Atira Women’s Resource Society.
  • The BC CEDAW group held a press conference last week to draw attention to the lack of progress on recommendations they made for the government to address low social assistance rates and the continuing disappearance and murder of Aboriginal women and girls.
  • Battered Women’s Support Services has just started a campaign called The Violence Stops Here, which asks both men and women to take a pledge to work to end violence against women.
  • February 14th is coming up, and that means a plethora of interesting feminist marches and events across the country. Here are the local events I’ve heard of. If I’ve missed any, add them in the comments below or let me know what’s going on in your neck of the woods!
      • This year’s Women’s Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Women takes place on Feb. 14th, starting at the Carnegie Centre Theatre at 401 Main St at noon, where family members will share personal stories. The march begins at one with stops around the DTES where women were last seen and a smudge and cedar ceremony will take place. At 3 a healing circle and candlelight vigil will be held. Check out the Facebook group for more info.
      • In Victoria events start tomorrow (more info here) and the Stolen Sisters Memorial Campus March will take place on February 11th at 11:30 at the UVic SUB.
      • The Girls’ Action Foundation has their National Day of Action on Feb. 14th. There are a lot of associated projects, including show of work by First Nations women artists in West Van called 10 Women, 10 Nations running March 2-12. There’s also an Unlabel Fashion Workshop in Victoria put on by Antidote. No date yet that I could see but  you can get more info here. Also check out the Girls’ Action Foundation feminist Valentine’s e-cards!
      • UBC V-Day always puts on great events at this time of year. This year their productions of the Vagina Monologues will take place on Feb. 9th, 11th, and 13th at 7:30. They’re also putting on Eve Ensler’s A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and a Prayer on Feb. 10th and 12th with a matinee on the 13th. Get tickets here.
